  Aaliyah Dana Haughton (/a:'li:@/ ah'LEE-@ Jan. 16, 1979 (January 16, 1979 - August 25 (2001)) was an American singer and actress. She was credited with helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip music, earning her monikers the "Princess of R&B" and the "Queen of Urban Pop". Born in Brooklyn but raised in Detroit She first achieved notoriety at 10, when she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert with Gladys Knight. Aaliyah was signed to Jive Records at the age of 12 and was signed by her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records at 12. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly who was her mentor and lead producer and songwriter of her debut album Ain't Nothing More Than a Number. The album sold three million copies across the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). After reports of an illegal union with Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records.Aaliyah worked with record producer Timbaland as well as Missy Elliott for her follow-up album, One in a Million which sold 3 million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies across the globe. The year 2000 saw Aaliyah appeared in her debut film, Romeo Must Die. Aaliyah contributed to the soundtrack for Romeo Must Die, and resulted in the single "Try Again".
